UNITED TRAIN OF ARTILLERY (1775)
Perhaps the first flag to symbolize the colonies using thirteen stars is the flag used by the military battery of Providence, RI, called the United Train of Artillery, organized in 1775. The field was yellow with a fouled anchor, two cannons, scrolls with mottos and coiled rattlesnake circled by thirteen blue five-pointed stars. The flag is preserved at the Historical Society Museum in Providence.
