49-Star Flag (1959)

Alaska was admitted to the Union on January 3, 1959.  Purchased from Russia in 1867, Alaska was the first state located outside the contiguous boundaries of the United States.  It is twice the size of Texas and has the nation's highest mountain, Mt. McKinley (20,300 ft).

This flag flew officially for one year.
