UNIFORMS
OF
THE AMERICAN
REVOLUTION
An American loyalist or "Tory"
unit, Butler's Rangers were raised by Major John Butler, an ex-officer of the
Indian Department in September, 1777. Initially eight companies strong
comprising experienced woodsmen, two of the companies were conversed in the
way of the American Native American (Indian) and were obliged to speak the
Iroquois language. The unit was used as raiders along the New York
frontiers. They became notorious after laying waste in the Wyoming
Valley after defeating a force of militia in July, 1778, when aided by their
Iroquois allies, they killed and scalped most of the inhabitants.
