UNIFORMS
OF
THE AMERICAN
REVOLUTION
A regiment of Green Mountain Rangers was
raised by Congress in July, 1775 and was 500 strong. Previously settlers
in the regions of Vermont and New Hampshire had banded together into units of
militia. These small companies were formed into regiments under Colonel
Ethan Allen and styled the Green Mountain Boys and were at Fort Ticonderoga
and Bunker Hill. The earlier unit was probably clothed in their normal
everyday clothing or the hunting shirt. The later regiment were dressed
in a green coat with red facings, buckskin breeches and waistcoats.
Officers carried a light musket or fusil when in the field.
