UNIFORMS OF
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Formed in June, 1775, as a battalion of one rifle company and seven battalion companies; in 1776, they became the 1st Regiment of Continental Line and from the 1st January 1777, they were designated the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment of the Pennsylvania Continental Line and served to the end of the war.  By order of Congress in 1776, Pennsylvania was to supply 12 regiments of infantry.  Each infantry company was to be commanded by a captain, 2 lieutenants, 1 ensign, 4 sergeants, 4 corporals, 1 drummer and fifer and 76 privates.

The dress uniform was a brown coat faced with green, but in the field hunting shirts were more in order.
