UNIFORMS OF
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

In 1776 the regiment was reputedly the best uniformed of all the Continental Line regiments.  Initially formed on December 8, 1775, soldiers were required to serve until 31st December, 1776, being placed under the command of Colonel John Haslet.  The imminent disbanding of the regiment moved Congress to issue an order to raise a new regiment around the nucleus of the old.  The new regiment was very slow in recruiting and an incentive for services was implemented by Congress with bounties of land and money.  By May, 1778 nine companies had been mustered and uniformed as shown.
