UNIFORMS
OF
THE AMERICAN
REVOLUTION
Raised in 1685, the regiment arrived
in Boston in October, 1774. The experiences gained in the French
Indian Wars twenty years previously found the normal uniform an encumbrance
when fighting in the primeval forests of Canada and North America and were
adapted accordingly with hat brims being cut and worn in various fashions,
coats were shortened to facilitate ease of movement, etc. through the woods.
When light infantry companies were officially brought on to the regimental
establishment their uniforms saw most of these innovations adopted.
Many regiments adopted waistbelts with the cartridge box worn on the front
and nearly all adopted the hatchet to supplement the bayonet. The
style of headdress varied between regiments. The regiments returned
to England in 1779. Facings yellow, officer's lace silver, mens'
lace white with blue line.
